Customize the suggested questions on your product pages

How Olvio writes the two suggested questions on each product page, and how to replace them with your own on the Questions page.

Customize the suggested questions on your product pages

On your product pages, the Olvio widget shows up to two suggested questions under the Hook question. When a shopper clicks one, the chat opens and sends that question. Olvio's AI writes these questions for each product, and you can replace either one with your own on the Questions page. This works on every plan: Starter, Growth and Scale.

How the AI writes suggested questions

The AI writes two questions per product, based on that product's details from Shopify: title, product type, vendor, tags, description and metafields (metafields from review apps, and metafields that point to something else such as a file, another product or a page, are left out). Your AI Setup settings and knowledge files aren't used for suggested questions. The product's custom.olvio_knowledge note is used like its other metafields. For a long description or a long metafield, including that note, only the beginning is used, and for a product with many tags, only the first ones are used. See Add product-specific notes with the custom.olvio_knowledge metafield.

  • If a product has no questions yet, Olvio writes them the first time a shopper opens its product page, which can take a few seconds. The widget waits for this before it appears, and later shoppers see the same questions. If Olvio can't write the questions, the widget appears without them and Olvio tries again on a later visit.

  • Once shoppers have asked enough questions in the chat on a product's page, the AI bases that product's next questions on what they ask there. When Olvio rewrites a product's questions after you edit it in Shopify, they're based on the product's details again until their next refresh.

  • Olvio refreshes a product's questions regularly, more often once they're based on shopper questions. When a refresh happens on a shopper's visit, the widget can take a few seconds to appear on that visit while new questions are written.

  • When you change an active product's title, description, tags or other content in Shopify, Olvio writes new questions for it overnight. When Olvio can tell the content is unchanged, for example after a price or stock update, it usually keeps the current questions.

  • Questions are written in the language of the page when your widget serves that language, and otherwise in your default language. On a page in a language Olvio doesn't support, they're in English when your widget serves English.

Each time the AI writes or translates suggested questions, it sends a request to Claude on your Anthropic API key. See What uses your Anthropic API key, and what doesn't.

What suggested questions need

Suggested questions, including the ones you write yourself, only appear when all of these are true:

  • Your store has an active Olvio plan.

  • An Anthropic API key is saved on the API Key page.

  • The product is synced to Olvio.

If you write only one question for a product, it appears together with the AI's question. If Olvio's request to Claude fails on that visit, neither appears until a later visit. If the AI's reply can't be used, your question appears on its own until the product's questions are next refreshed. Writing both questions avoids this in your default language.

If suggested questions still don't appear, see Suggested questions don't appear on my product pages.

Find a product on the Questions page

  1. Open Questions in the Olvio app menu.

  2. Type part of a product title in Search products, or pick All statuses, Active, Draft or Archived in the status filter.

The table lists your synced products sorted by title, 50 per page, in three columns: Product, Question 1 and Question 2. When there's more than one page, use the arrows at the bottom of the table.

If no product is listed, the page shows No products found: with a search, No product matches your search.; otherwise, Products appear here once your catalog has synced. If you picked a status without searching, that second message can also mean that no product has that status.

Read the question cells

  • A cell with a sparkle icon is left to the AI: it shows the AI's current question in your default language, or Generated on first visit when no AI question is stored yet.

  • A cell without the sparkle shows a question you wrote.

  • Generated on first visit means no AI question is stored for your default language right now, for example because no shopper has opened the page yet or because the product's questions are due for a refresh. The AI writes it when a shopper next opens the product page in that language, or overnight after you edit the product in Shopify while it's active.

On your storefront, all suggested questions show the same sparkle icon, whether you or the AI wrote them.

Replace a suggested question

  1. In the product's Question 1 or Question 2 cell, select the existing text and type your question over it. The sparkle disappears as soon as the text differs from the AI's question. If you delete all the text, the AI's question comes back.

  2. Edit other products on the same page if you want. The save bar opens as soon as you change something.

  3. Click Save in the save bar. A Saved message confirms it. To undo your unsaved changes, click Discard.

A question can be up to 120 characters. Question 1 is shown first on your product page and Question 2 second. The two cells are independent: you can write Question 1 and let the AI write Question 2.

Save before you search, change the status filter or move to another page: unsaved changes on the current page are lost. If the message Could not save. Please try again. appears, the table goes back to what is saved. Check which products still show their previous question, type those questions again and click Save.

Go back to the AI's question

To hand a question back to the AI, delete the text in its cell and click Save. Before you save, the cell may still show your previous question with the sparkle. After you save, it shows Generated on first visit until the AI writes a new question. Leaving a cell empty always means the AI writes that question, so you can't hide a suggested question from this page.

When you save a product, Olvio drops its stored questions and writes new AI questions on the next visit to that product page. Until then, its AI cells show Generated on first visit, and the new AI question may be worded differently.

Text Olvio can't use

For safety, Olvio doesn't keep a question that contains:

  • the characters < or >

  • a link prefix such as http:, https:, mailto:, tel:, sms:, file:, data: or javascript:

Link prefixes are detected anywhere in the text, in capital or lowercase letters, even at the end of a longer word. For example, Pastel: which shade suits me? isn't kept because it contains tel:.

No error is shown. After you click Save, the cell goes back to the AI and shows Generated on first visit until the AI writes its question. Rephrase your question and save again.

Your questions in other languages

Write your questions in your store's default language. Starter serves only your default language, so shoppers see your questions without translation.

On Growth and Scale, when a shopper views a page in another language your widget serves, Olvio translates your questions into that language with Claude, on your Anthropic API key. The translation is stored and shown to later shoppers. If the translation fails, shoppers on that language see your original text until the product's questions are next refreshed. If Olvio's other request to Claude on that visit fails, no suggested questions appear in that language on that visit, even when you wrote both questions.

On French pages, Olvio adds the non-breaking space that French uses before ?, !, : and ;.

To see which languages your widget serves, read Multi-language: choose which languages your widget serves.

When shoppers see your changes

  • Shoppers who open the product page after you save see your questions within a few minutes. On the first visit, the widget can take a few seconds to appear while Olvio writes any AI question for that product.

  • A shopper who recently viewed that product in the same browser tab may keep seeing the previous questions for a few more minutes, and one last time on their next view after that.

To check your changes, wait a couple of minutes after saving, then open the product page in a private browsing window.

Change how the question buttons look

In Appearance, open the Product page tab. The Suggestions card has a Corner radius slider for the question buttons. Their colors, font and font size come from your Appearance settings. If Use custom colors for this block or Use custom font size for this block is checked in the Olvio — Product page block's settings in the theme editor, that block's own colors or font size are used instead. See Customize widget colors, Customize the widget font and font size, Customize the widget's corner radius and Add custom CSS to the widget.

Ideas for your own questions

  • Start from what shoppers ask: the Customer question map on the Conversations page groups their questions by topic once your store has 100 conversations and enough different questions from the last 30 days. See Customer question map: see what shoppers ask about.

  • After you add an answer for a question from the Unanswered tab, consider turning it into a suggested question so more shoppers see the answer. See Find and fix knowledge gaps on the Unanswered tab.

  • Ask about the result the shopper wants, in their own words, for example Is it gentle on sensitive skin? rather than a technical detail.
