Turn on the Olvio Advisor and add Advisor links to your store

Turn on the Olvio Advisor app embed, then copy a chip's direct link into menus, buttons or emails so shoppers can open the Advisor.

Turn on the Olvio Advisor and add Advisor links to your store

Shoppers open Olvio Advisor by clicking an Advisor link that points to a page of your store. To set this up, turn on the Olvio Advisor app embed in your theme, then place a chip's direct link wherever you want shoppers to start. Olvio Advisor is available on the Growth and Scale plans.

Before you start

Step 1: Turn on the Olvio Advisor app embed

The app embed loads Olvio Advisor on every page of your store. It has no settings of its own.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.

  2. Find your published theme and click Edit theme.

  3. In the sidebar, click the App embeds icon.

  4. Beside Olvio Advisor, click the toggle to turn it on.

  5. Click Save.

App embeds are turned on theme by theme. If you publish a different theme later, turn Olvio Advisor on in that theme too.

Olvio also checks this for you. When you have at least one chip and the embed is off in your published theme, the Advisor page shows Advisor isn't visible on your storefront yet. Click Open Theme Editor to open the theme editor in a new tab with Olvio Advisor selected, make sure its toggle is on, and click Save. The banner disappears the next time you open the Advisor page. If you later turn the embed off or publish a theme where it is off, the banner may not appear right away. If Olvio can't read your theme, no banner is shown. In both cases, check the toggle yourself if links don't respond.

Step 2: Copy a chip's direct link

  1. In the Olvio admin, open Widget and click Configure on the Advisor card.

  2. Beside the chip you want to link to, click Edit.

  3. In the Direct link section, click Copy beside URL hash.

The hash looks like #olvio_advisor=chip:chip_1a2b3c4d. Each chip has its own. The HTML example field below it holds a ready-made link tag with the text Advisor, with its own Copy button, if you prefer to paste HTML. This HTML link only works on pages of your store. For menu items and emails, use the full page address with the hash, as shown in Step 3.

The Direct link section appears only on saved chips. When you save a new chip, Olvio takes you back to the Advisor page: click Edit on the new chip to get its link.

A chip's link keeps working when you change its label or its axes. If you remove the chip (click Remove, then Save), its link stops opening the Advisor.

Step 3: Add the link to your store

Add the hash to the end of the address of any page on your store that doesn't already contain a #, for example https://your-store.com/collections/all#olvio_advisor=chip:chip_1a2b3c4d. The page loads and the Advisor opens on that chip.

Good places for an Advisor link:

  • A navigation menu item

  • A call-to-action button, such as the one in your homepage banner

  • A banner on your product pages

  • A link in a marketing email

To add the link as a menu item:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Content → Menus.

  2. Click the title of the menu you want to edit.

  3. Click Add menu item.

  4. Enter a name for the menu item.

  5. Paste the full address with the hash in the Search or paste a link field. Wait for the dropdown to show it, then select it. If you press Enter or save without selecting it, the link isn't added.

  6. Click Add.

  7. Click Save or Save menu.

What shoppers see

  • The Olvio chat panel opens and the chip's label is sent as the shopper's message, so the Advisor replies right away. If an Advisor conversation is already under way in the same browser tab, the label is added to it.

  • A link to the page the shopper is already on opens the panel without reloading the page.

  • Olvio removes the hash from the address bar, so reloading the page doesn't send the chip's label again.

  • The panel header shows your shop name, and the panel uses the colors, font, corner radius and custom CSS you set on the Appearance page.

  • The conversation carries over when the shopper moves to another page of your store in the same browser tab, for a while after the last reply. Closing the panel clears the conversation from the screen.

  • If the shopper already had an Advisor conversation, even one they closed, opening an Advisor link again can offer to pick up where they left off: it asks You already have a conversation with our assistant. Would you like to resume it or start over? with the buttons Continue and Start over. The chip's label is sent only if they click Start over, which starts a new conversation. Continue brings back the earlier one.

Test your link

  1. Open your storefront in a private browsing window.

  2. Open a page of your store that isn't a product page, such as your home page, with the hash added to the end of its address, for example https://your-store.com/#olvio_advisor=chip:chip_1a2b3c4d. You can also click your link where you placed it, if it leads to a page that isn't a product page.

  3. Check that the chat panel opens and the Advisor replies.

  4. In the Olvio admin, open Conversations and select the Advisor tab. Your test conversation is listed there.

Product pages that show the Olvio block can open the Advisor even while the app embed is off, so a test there doesn't confirm the embed is on.

If a link doesn't open the Advisor

  • The app embed is off. Product pages that show the Olvio block can open the Advisor on their own. If a link opens the Advisor on those product pages but not on other pages, such as your home page or collections, the Olvio Advisor app embed is off. Turn it on in your published theme and click Save.

  • Your plan doesn't include the Advisor. Links only work while your store has an active Growth or Scale subscription.

  • The chip was removed or the hash was changed. If the hash was changed, copy it again from the chip's Direct link section. If the chip was removed, replace the link with the link of an existing chip, or remove the link.

  • The address already contained a #. Olvio doesn't recognize the Advisor hash when it follows another #. Remove the existing #… part from the address, then add the Advisor hash.

  • The page is in a language Olvio doesn't cover. When Hide the widget on languages Olvio doesn’t cover is checked in the Languages card on the Advanced tab of Appearance, Advisor links don't respond on those languages either. See Multi-language: choose which languages your widget serves.

  • A reply was still being written. A click on a link to the current page is ignored while Olvio is writing a reply. Wait for the reply, then reload the page.

If the panel opens but replies Sorry, an error occurred. Please try again., the link works and the problem is on the reply side: see The chat replies 'Sorry, an error occurred. Please try again.' for fixes.
