Connect your Anthropic (Claude) API key
Olvio answers your shoppers with Anthropic's Claude models, using your own Anthropic API key. Anthropic bills your Anthropic account directly for the requests Olvio makes with the key, separately from your Olvio plan.
The API Key page is in the app menu once you've chosen a plan. If the setup guide is still shown on the Dashboard (click Olvio in the app menu), its step Add your Anthropic API key links to the page with Add key. Once a key is saved, the step is checked off and its button changes to Manage key.
Create a key in the Claude Console
Go to the Claude Console and sign in, or create an Anthropic account. The console.anthropic.com address shown in Olvio opens the same console.
Open Settings → API keys and click Create key. If Create key is disabled, ask an organization admin to change your role or to create a service account key for Olvio.
Give the key a name you'll recognize, such as Olvio, and choose an expiration. The expiration can't be changed after the key is created, and Olvio can't answer shoppers once the key expires, so choose a long duration, or Never if your organization allows it.
Set Linked account. A personal key, linked to yourself, stops working if you lose access to your Anthropic organization or to the key's workspace, for example when you leave the company. Anthropic recommends a service account for production services such as Olvio, and a service account key keeps working when a person leaves. An organization admin creates service accounts in the Claude Console. A service account key stops working if the service account is archived or removed from the key's workspace.
Scope the key to a single workspace when you create it, even if your organization has only one workspace. Olvio's requests don't name a workspace, so Anthropic refuses every request made with a key that isn't scoped to one.
Copy the key and store it somewhere safe. It starts with
sk-ant-. The Claude Console shows it only once, when you create it. If you lose it, create a new key.
If you give the key an expiration date, replace it in Olvio before that date. Anthropic rejects an expired key, and Olvio can't answer shoppers until you connect a new one. Anthropic emails the key's creator before the key expires, unless the key was created with a lifetime of less than 7 days.
Unless Anthropic invoices your organization monthly, Claude API usage is paid with prepaid credits. Before you save the key in Olvio, make sure your organization has credits. If it doesn't, sign in to the Claude Console with an Admin or Billing role, open Settings → Billing and click Buy credits. Without credits, Anthropic refuses Olvio's test request and the key can't be saved. To keep your balance from running out, click Edit in the Auto-reload section and turn it on.
Connect the key in Olvio
In the Olvio admin, open API Key.
In the Anthropic configuration section, paste the key into the API key field.
Check the Claude model. New stores start on Claude Haiku 4.5 — fastest, lowest cost (recommended).
Click Save in the save bar.
Before saving, Olvio removes spaces, line breaks, invisible characters and curly quotes, and turns long dashes into hyphens. These can slip in when a key is copied from a formatted document. It then checks the key by sending Anthropic a very small test request with the selected model, which Anthropic bills like any other request.
When the check succeeds, Olvio encrypts and saves the key. You see Settings saved, the field empties, and the Status badge changes from Not configured to Connected. Connected only means that a key is saved. The page doesn't check the key with Anthropic again, so the badge still shows Connected if the key later expires, your credit balance runs out or your Anthropic spend limit is reached. Discard clears what you typed and resets the model to its saved value.
If the save fails
When a check fails, nothing is saved and Olvio briefly shows an error message at the bottom of the page. If it disappears before you can read it, click Save in the save bar again. Messages you may see include:
Invalid Anthropic key. Please check it and try again. Anthropic didn't accept the key, for example because it's mistyped, incomplete, disabled or expired. Paste it again from where you stored it, or create a new key in the Claude Console.
The key doesn't look like an Anthropic API key… What you pasted doesn't start with
sk-ant-, is much too short or contains unexpected characters. Paste it again as plain text, without passing it through Word, Notion or a formatted email.Anthropic rejected this model for your account… The model isn't always the cause. When the message gives a reason after the colon, read it: if it's about a spend limit, your credit balance or a key that isn't scoped to a single workspace, fix that in the Claude Console. Changing the model won't help then.

Choose your Claude model
The Claude model menu offers three models: Claude Haiku 4.5 — fastest, lowest cost (recommended), Claude Sonnet 5 — balanced quality + cost and Claude Opus 5 — best quality, highest cost. As the page notes, the selected model is used for every chat, suggestion, and advisor turn. Anthropic bills each request at the rate of the model used; see Anthropic's pricing.
To switch, select another model and click Save. Olvio checks your saved key against the new model first, so you don't need to paste the key again. If no key is saved yet, paste one before saving. To choose a model and see what it's used for, see Choose your Claude model.
Set a spending limit
Anthropic lets you cap your monthly API spending, which protects you if a busy period brings more conversations than expected.
In the Claude Console, go to Settings → Billing.
In the Spend limits section, click Set limit, or Adjust limit if you already have one.
Enter the maximum you want to spend.
When your usage reaches the limit, Anthropic refuses new requests until the date it indicates, or until you raise or remove the limit. During that time Olvio can't answer shoppers, so leave some headroom. Olvio also stops answering if your credit balance runs out before the limit is reached. Replace your key
Replace the key when you create a new one, for example after rotating it or moving to another Anthropic account.
Open API Key. The API key field shows dots in place of your saved key, with the hint Leave empty to keep the current key. Enter a new key to replace it.
Paste the new key into the field.
Click Save.
Olvio checks the new key with Anthropic before saving. If the check succeeds, the new key replaces the old one, and your storefront uses it within about a minute. If it fails, your current key stays in place. Once the new key works, you can disable or delete the old one in the Claude Console.
Delete your key
Click Delete key on the API Key page. The button only appears when a key is saved, and there's no confirmation step: the key is removed immediately, you see Key removed, and the status goes back to Not configured. Your model choice is kept for when you connect a key again.
Without a key, Olvio can't answer shoppers. This takes effect on your storefront within about a minute. The widget still shows on your product pages, but without suggested questions, and every message gets the reply Sorry, an error occurred. Please try again. (or its translation on a storefront in another language). On the Growth and Scale plans, Olvio Advisor can't answer either.
Deleting the key in Olvio doesn't cancel it at Anthropic. If you no longer need it, disable or delete it in the Claude Console.
How your key is stored
Olvio encrypts your key with AES-GCM (256-bit) before storing it, tied to your store's domain so the encrypted key can't be used for another store. The key is never displayed again: the API key field shows dots in its place. When you uninstall Olvio, the key is deleted with the rest of your store's data about 48 hours later.
