Your setup guide: get Olvio ready for your first customer

Follow the four-step setup guide on your Olvio Dashboard to connect Claude, personalize Olvio, and add the chat to your product pages.

Your setup guide: get Olvio ready for your first customer

After you choose a plan, the Dashboard in Olvio shows a card called Get Olvio ready for your first customer. It lists four setup steps, takes you to the right screen for each one, and checks each step off automatically. This guide walks through each step, then what to set up next.

Find the setup guide

Open Olvio in your Shopify admin. The card sits near the top of the Dashboard, the page that opens when you click Olvio in the app menu.

The card only appears once you've chosen a plan. Until then, Olvio opens the Plans page instead. See Subscribe to a plan and start your free trial.

Under the card's title, a line such as 1 of 4 steps complete tracks your progress. Each completed step shows a check mark on a green background, and its button label changes, for example from Add key to Manage key.

You can complete the steps in any order. A step you finish elsewhere in Olvio is checked off too, the next time you open the Dashboard.

Step 1: Add your Anthropic API key

Olvio answers your shoppers with Anthropic's Claude models, using your own Anthropic API key. Anthropic bills you directly for your usage.

  1. Click Add key. The API Key page opens.

  2. Paste your key in the API key field. If you don't have one yet, create it in the Claude Console (the console.anthropic.com address shown on the API Key page opens the same console). If your Anthropic account has no credits, buy some there first: Olvio sends Anthropic a small test request when you click Save, and without credits Anthropic refuses it.

  3. Choose a Claude model. The list marks Claude Haiku 4.5 as recommended.

  4. Click Save.

If the test request fails, the key isn't saved. If it succeeds, Olvio encrypts the key before storing it. The step is marked done as soon as a key is saved, and the Status on the API Key page shows Connected.

Until a key is saved, the widget still appears on your product pages, but without suggested questions, and it can't answer shoppers.

Step 2: Personalize your AI

  1. Click Open AI Setup.

  2. In Business description, describe your store, what you sell, and who your customers are (up to 10,000 characters).

  3. Optionally, add keywords for your areas of expertise under Categories / Keywords, and Do and Don't rules under Conversation rules.

  4. Click Save.

The step is marked done once a business description is saved. Keywords and rules don't affect the checklist.

Step 3: Personalize the widget appearance

  1. Click Open Appearance.

  2. Use the Product page, Chat panel, and Style tabs to set the widget's text, avatar, colors, and font. The Live preview shows your changes as you go.

  3. If you changed anything, click Save.

This step is marked done the first time you open the Appearance page, even if you keep the default look.

Step 4: Add the Olvio block to your product page

The chat shows on your product pages once the Olvio — Product page block is added to your theme's product template. This requires an Online Store 2.0 theme.

  1. Click Open theme editor. Your theme editor opens in a new tab on your default product template, with the Olvio — Product page block added in a new Apps section for you to preview.

  2. Drag the new Apps section that contains the block to where you want the chat to appear.

  3. Click Save in the theme editor.

  4. After saving, open a product page on your storefront and confirm the widget appears where you placed it.

The shortcut adds the block to your default product template. If some products use another product template, add the block there too: see Add the Olvio widget to your product pages.

The step is marked done the first time the widget loads on an active product that Olvio has already imported. If other steps are still open, its button becomes View conversations; if this was the last step, the card disappears. The step can also be marked done while you preview the block in the theme editor, so it doesn't confirm that you saved. Always click Save in the theme editor, then check a product page on your storefront. If the Dashboard still shows Setting up your product catalog or Catalog sync in progress, wait for the import to finish, then open the product page again a few minutes later.

If your theme uses the older Online Store 1.0 format, the Dashboard shows Your theme is not compatible with Olvio's widget and the block can't be added. See Online Store 1.0 not supported — what to do.

Hide the setup guide

The card disappears on its own once all four steps are done.

To remove it earlier, click Hide next to the card's title. The card doesn't come back after you hide it, but each screen stays available from the app menu: API Key, AI Setup, and Appearance.

To add the Olvio block once the card is gone, follow the manual steps in Add the Olvio widget to your product pages.

Your catalog imports in the meantime

The first time you open Olvio after choosing a plan, it starts importing your Shopify products in the background. There's nothing to click.

A banner on the Dashboard shows Setting up your product catalog, then Catalog sync in progress. The import typically takes 2 to 10 minutes, longer for large catalogs, and the banner updates by itself. When it's done, a Catalog synced badge shows how many products Olvio has. If the Dashboard shows Some products aren't fully indexed instead, click Resync now.

The chat can't answer on a product page until that product has been imported. Until then, a shopper who asks a question there sees an error message (in English: Sorry, an error occurred. Please try again.).

If your store has no products yet, the import ends with Catalog sync failed. Add your products in your Shopify admin (new products sync to Olvio automatically), then click Retry sync to finish the import. If the banner shows Catalog sync failed for another reason, click Retry sync. If Resync now next to the Catalog synced badge is grayed out, hover over it to see when it becomes available again. See How Olvio keeps your catalog in sync.
