How conversion attribution works
Olvio links orders from your online store to the conversations shoppers had with it, so you can see which conversations are tied to a sale. The link relies on an anonymous session ID that Olvio adds to the shopper's Shopify cart, not on estimates. Revenue attribution is included in every plan: Starter, Growth and Scale.
How an order gets linked to a conversation
A shopper sends a message to Olvio on your storefront: by typing a question, by clicking a suggested question or, in Olvio Advisor (Growth and Scale plans, see What is Olvio Advisor?), by clicking an answer button or opening an Advisor link. An Advisor link sends the starter chip's label for the shopper, unless the Advisor first offers to resume an earlier conversation.
As soon as Olvio successfully answers one of the shopper's messages, the widget adds an attribute named
_olvio_sessionto the shopper's Shopify cart. Its value is a random anonymous session ID. If the cart already carries an ID from an earlier conversation, the widget usually reuses it.The ID lives on the cart, not on a product, so it doesn't matter how or when products were added to the cart: from the chat, from your theme's add-to-cart button or from another app. Accelerated checkout buttons on the product page, such as Buy it now, are an exception (see What isn't attributed below).
At checkout, Shopify copies the attribute onto the order and notifies Olvio of the new order.
Olvio records the order, and keeps the ID with it only if the ID already belongs to a conversation in your store.
The order counts as attributed when a conversation with that ID started within 7 days before or after the order was placed.
The 7-day attribution window
The attribution window is a fixed 7 days. There is no setting to change it.
The window works in both directions around the order:
A shopper asks Olvio about a product, then places an order within the next 7 days.
A shopper who had already chatted with Olvio before buying, so their cart carried the ID, starts another conversation within 7 days after the order, for example about delivery. This works only if the widget uses the same ID for the new conversation, for example because the ID was saved in the shopper's browser (see the Consent point below). The order then counts even if the earlier chat was more than 7 days before it. In Olvio Advisor, a shopper who comes back with the same ID picks up their earlier Advisor conversation instead of starting another one, so it keeps its original start date. Only Start over, offered when the Advisor asks whether to resume, creates a new conversation.
A conversation that starts only after the order, with no earlier conversation, doesn't attribute that order: the order didn't carry an ID.
The products don't have to match. If a shopper chats about one product and then buys a different one, the order is still attributed. The 7 days are counted from the moment each conversation started.
Which orders count
Only orders placed through your online store checkout. Orders from point of sale, draft orders and other sales channels are never attributed.
Only orders placed while you have an active plan, including during your free trial. Olvio doesn't record orders placed before you choose a plan.
Olvio records the order total at the moment the order is placed: after discounts, including tax and shipping, in your store's currency, even if the shopper paid in another currency. Later refunds, edits or cancellations don't change this amount.
What isn't attributed
An order is not attributed to Olvio when:
The shopper never sent a message to Olvio, or every message they sent ended in an error.
The shopper checked out with a different cart, for example on another device or in another browser.
The shopper bought with an accelerated checkout button on the product page, such as Buy it now, which skips the cart. Shopify's accelerated checkout buttons don't support cart attributes, so the order doesn't carry the ID.
The
_olvio_sessionattribute was removed from the cart, for example by an app or a theme customization that clears cart attributes. No conversation with that ID started within 7 days before or after the order.
The conversation, or Olvio's record of the order, has been deleted. Olvio's order records are deleted after 90 days on every plan, and conversations are deleted at the end of your plan's conversation history: 30 days on Starter, 90 days on Growth and 365 days on Scale. Older orders therefore stop counting as attributed.
These orders still appear in Shopify as usual. They just don't count in Olvio's attributed numbers.
Where you see attributed orders
Dashboard (click Olvio in the app menu): Revenue with Olvio, Orders with Olvio, Average order value and Conversion rate with Olvio are based on attributed orders. Each order counts once, on the day it was placed in your store's time zone, within the date range you pick. Orders placed more than 90 days ago no longer count, even with Last 365 days, and an order can stop counting sooner once its conversation has been deleted, which happens soonest on Starter (see What isn't attributed above). See Read your Olvio dashboard: revenue, rates and date ranges and Conversion rate with Olvio vs your baseline.
Conversations: the Converted tab lists conversations with an attributed order, and the Outcome column shows the total of those orders for each conversation.
A single conversation: a Converted badge appears next to its title, and the Outcome card shows Revenue and Order, a link that opens the order in your Shopify admin. The link shows Shopify's order ID, not the order number. When several orders match, Revenue shows their total and Order links to one of them.
Totals can differ between these pages. If a shopper had several conversations within 7 days of the same order, each of those conversations shows that order on the Conversations page, while the Dashboard counts the order only once. Adding up the Outcome column can therefore give more than Revenue with Olvio. The Conversations page also shows only your most recent 500 conversations.
The _olvio_session attribute on your orders
When you open an order in your Shopify admin or export your orders, you may see an attribute named _olvio_session. It's the anonymous session ID described above, and it's how Olvio links the order to a conversation.
What it contains: a random ID generated by the widget. It doesn't contain the shopper's name, email address, phone number or address.
Where you see it: on the order's details page in your Shopify admin, and in the Note Attributes column when you export orders to a CSV file.
What shoppers see: it isn't meant to be shown to shoppers, but depending on your theme and your notification templates, it may appear on the cart page or in order emails.
Older orders: orders placed with an earlier version of Olvio may show
olvio_session, without the underscore. It's the same kind of anonymous session ID, and Olvio still reads it.Consent: the widget saves the ID in the shopper's browser for later visits only when Shopify's customer privacy tools are active on the page and report that the shopper allows analytics: they accepted it in your store's consent banner, or your store's settings don't require consent in their region. It doesn't delete an ID already saved if the shopper changes that choice later. It may also keep the ID for the current tab together with the chat. Whatever the shopper's choice, once Olvio successfully answers one of their messages, the widget adds the ID to the cart. It stays on the cart for as long as the cart is kept, and the widget can reuse it on later visits with that cart, so an order placed within 7 days after a conversation is attributed either way. A conversation after the order counts only if the widget still has the same ID: without an ID saved in the browser, that conversation may get a new ID and then doesn't count.
Don't remove or rename this attribute with a cart customization or an app: orders without it can't be attributed. For everything Olvio keeps about shoppers, see What data Olvio collects about your shoppers.
