How Olvio reads your store pages, blog articles and policies

Olvio reads your store's pages, blog articles and policies so the chat can answer delivery, returns and other store questions.

How Olvio reads your store pages, blog articles and policies

Besides your products, Olvio reads the pages, blog articles and policies published on your online store. This lets the chat on your product pages answer questions like How long does delivery take? or Can I return an item? from your own text. There's nothing to set up, and it works on every plan, including during the free trial (see Your 14-day free trial explained).

What Olvio reads

  • Pages: the pages of your online store, such as your About, FAQ or delivery pages.

  • Blog articles: the articles published on your blogs.

  • Policies: the policies you set in Settings → Policies in your Shopify admin, such as your return, shipping and privacy policies, terms of service and legal notice. A policy you haven't filled in is skipped.

Product and collection details don't come from here: Olvio gets them from your catalog sync. See How Olvio keeps your catalog in sync.

How Olvio finds your pages

Olvio finds your pages and blog articles through your store's sitemap, which Shopify generates automatically, so a page that has never appeared in your sitemap isn't read. Blog listing pages are skipped, because each article is read on its own.

Olvio reads your store the way a visitor without a password sees it, so while your online store is password protected, it can't read your pages or blog articles. Once you remove the password, Olvio starts reading them at its next daily check. On a store with many pages, this can take a few days.

Olvio reads your store in its default language, at the addresses without a language or country prefix such as /fr/. Translated versions of your pages aren't read separately, but a shopper who writes in another language can still get an answer from your default-language text.

What part of each page is read

Olvio reads the page's text as your store sends it, and keeps only the main content area your theme marks as the page content. Text that a script or app loads into the page afterwards isn't read. Your header, footer, menus, forms and blog comments are left out. Text you add with theme sections is included when it sits inside that main area.

Standard Shopify themes such as Dawn mark this area. If a custom theme doesn't, Olvio may not be able to read its pages and blog articles. Your policies are still read, because Shopify, not your theme, lays out the policy text itself.

Pages with almost no text, such as a page with only a title and a button, are skipped. On very long pages, only the beginning is used, so put key details like delivery times or return windows near the top.

When changes reach the chat

Olvio first reads your store at its next daily check after you choose a plan, so answers from your pages can take up to a day to appear, and a few days on a store with many pages. After that, it checks your store for changes once a day.

  • Pages and blog articles: an edit you save to a page or article in Shopify is usually picked up at the next daily check. Text that lives in your theme, such as a section added in the theme editor, may not mark the page as changed. If it doesn't, an edit there can take up to about a month, sometimes a little longer, to reach the chat.

  • Policies: policies aren't in your sitemap, so Olvio can't tell when one changes and reads them again about once a week. After you edit a policy, the chat can keep using the previous text for up to a week or a little longer.

The Resync now button on the Olvio Dashboard syncs your products and collections only. It doesn't re-read your pages, and there's no manual refresh for them.

If a change can't wait

Add the new information in AI Setup: state it in your Business description, or add a document under Knowledge files. A saved Business description reaches the chat within about a minute, and a new knowledge file within a few minutes. Until Olvio re-reads the page or policy, the chat can still see the old text too, so state the change plainly, for example: Our return window is 30 days. See Configure your AI Setup and Add knowledge files and web pages to Olvio's knowledge base.

Deleted or hidden pages

When you delete a page or blog article, or set it to Hidden in Shopify, Olvio stops using it once a daily check confirms it's no longer on your online store, usually at the next check. Olvio also stops using a page once a check finds it no longer has enough text to read. When you remove a policy's text in Shopify, Olvio stops using it the next time it re-reads your policies, which can take a week or a little longer. If your store doesn't respond during a check, Olvio keeps the text it already has and tries again later.

How the chat uses your pages

For each shopper question, Olvio picks the few passages from your pages that best match it, each from a different page, and gives them to the AI for that reply. Passages that don't match closely are left out, and very short messages like ok don't trigger a search.

The AI is instructed to state the information as its own knowledge, without telling shoppers "according to our FAQ" or "the page says".

The AI can link to a page it used, with descriptive link text such as shipping policy. Olvio checks the links in each reply. A link written as a path on your store is kept when it points to a page, blog article or policy Olvio has found on your store, or to a product the chat had for that reply: the product the shopper is viewing, a product the chat found or that came up in the conversation, or one of your active products on the list Olvio keeps for the chat, which on a large catalog doesn't include every product. A path to a collection page is removed.

A link written as a full web address, including one on your own store's domain, is kept only when that website's full address, starting with https:// or http://, is written out in the text of your Business description, the Knowledge files and External web pages the chat uses, the description or metafields of the product the shopper is viewing, the metafields of a product the chat found for that reply, or the store text used for that reply. The chat uses only your most recent files and pages, counted together, and a limited amount of their text, so an address that appears only in an older entry, or in a part of the text the chat doesn't use, doesn't count. The address you add a page under doesn't count on its own, and neither does an address that sits only behind linked words. Email and phone links are always kept. Other links are removed. When a removed link was on words, the words stay as plain text.

Olvio Advisor and the suggested questions on your product pages don't use your pages, blog articles or policies.

What it costs

Reading your pages runs on Olvio's side and doesn't use your Anthropic API key. When passages are added to a reply, they count as input tokens on your Anthropic bill for that reply only. See What uses your Anthropic API key, and what doesn't.

When you uninstall Olvio

Olvio stops reading your store when you uninstall the app. What it read is deleted with the rest of your store's data when Shopify sends its data deletion request, about 48 hours after you uninstall. See What happens to my data when I uninstall Olvio.
